Oh, the wonder and luxury of a lazy morning! After leisurely catching myself up on the blob, we had a nice hot breakfast in the hotel sharing a table with a couple from, guess where . . . . Woodstock, Georgia!!! The world is small indeed! Today is their last day in Iceland. They've been here for one week. They have been on all the expensive excursions and drove a rented a car all around the land. They have stayed out until the wee hours of the morning and still . . . no Northern Lights for them either!!! Is this all a snipe hunt???
With nothing pressing on the schedule, we walked our usual walk, 2.5 miles to the city center once again where all the shops and cool restaurants and bars are located and then proceeded another half-mile walk to the Museum of Iceland. Snow was tumbling down all the way and angled just at our faces
The National Museum illustrates the making of the nation of Iceland, documenting it from the 8th century to current times. It was completely fascinating. Just imagine seeing the early Nordic fishing spears and hooks, armor, chain mail, jewelry, and woven wool garments hundreds of years old still in near original condition - probably because of the natural refrigeration that occurs here!! (Please forgive me for my silliness, it's cold here!!!) Religion also had great prominence. Norway who established law here also made the nation Catholic. But once Iceland was proclaimed Lutheran by the Danes, that religion and culture took root and flourished. The Lutheran faith not only served as religious foundation, but also served as a basis of government as well.
As we strolled through the museum we encountered a group of about 10 five-to six-year-olds with their teachers. They were all dressed in colorful clothing, had messy hair and stocking-feet and spoke in high-pitched kid-voices . They observed and listened carefully to the information their teachers were relating in a language and accent I could never grasp. Still, they controlled themselves best they could and politely raised their hands when they had questions and laughed loudly when they saw something they thought funny! How very sweet!!!
After the museum, we needed to eat. We are becoming addicted to soup. We stopped for lunch about 3 pm at Hresso/Bjarni (just try to say that) and enjoyed a glass of red and again, their traditional meat (lamb) soup with hearty bread and butter. Both of us swore, we never need anything ever again to eat but goo9d soup!! Delicious!!!Delicious!!! They played great Icelandic rock music there too! It was all just right.
We marched the 2.5 miles back to Hotel Cabin, once again, in falling snow. In spite of the snow, the sky to the north was clear and we were hopeful. Maybe tonight, our boat trip out on the ocean to catch the Northern Lights will not be cancelled. It was though.
Now, we are trying to double-down. The weather forecast shows clear skies on Saturday. (Wouldn't you know!!!) We have placed a request to Iceland Air to extend our stay until Monday. We have been told that the airline is very strict and does not allow changes but who knows . . . please wish us luck.
