I'm sure I've said how cold it is overnight! More than bloody cold last night! -2 degrees. Now that's just silly, but we don't care because the day loomed cloudless and sunny with a 'picture post-card' blue sky.
Ok? Ready for our next adventure, we are picked by mini bus and off into Skippers Canyon. The scenery is jaw-dropping! The narrow single lane width, two way road with massive, no barrier fenced, drops into infinity! Classic white-knuckle stuff for some, particularly those with a fear of heights. The mini bus hung its bum over the edge on some particularly cruel bends, whilst at other times it was a hairs breadth from the craggy outcrops of stone on the cliff face. Truly scintillating stuff as we travelled deeper down into the canyon.
And there, 45 minutes in, was the portable jetty set up on the shingle bed of the Shotover river. Here's where the show of hands NOT going on the Shotover Jet far outweighed those who were.
Kitted out in our life jackets, thick warms gloves and safety instructions we head off into the shallow water. A couple of 360 degree spins at warp speed warmed us up and we were off, ducking and weaving through the narrow cliffs and river bed, getting closer and closer to rocks on the side or in the middle of the water. Shingle was our roadway with about an inch of water between it and the boat. Thrills but no spills. An exhilarating journey up and then back down river.
The company we did all this with is a 5th generation local family business. On to the family house for coffee and history lesson by 4th generation owner, Minky! No frills but plenty of good old country spirit and hard work.
On to their museum of local and family historical artefacts and memorabilia set high above the river by their original 100+ year old suspension bridge.
A tour not to be missed with excellent commentary from Willie our guide and driver and Elliott the deathly-defying crack jet boat driver. I wouldn't have missed this for quids. The company was called Skippers Canyon Jetboat Tours.
