….After a very long bus journey (and an oh so annoying crazy guy) we finally arrived back in good old Koh San Road, for the 3rd time. We had a night out with a couple we met on the bus (back to our favourite singing guy at the roof bar!) and on our 1 whole day there we went to the Grand Palace which we had failed to see last time…and it was grand!! Very big, and gold, and sparkly (see Bangkok 2 photos) so that was cool. We had intended to post some stuff back from Bangkok, including a couple of large paintings we bought in Siem Reap, an Angkor temple book, my camera box and various other annoyances, but, once again managed to catch the weekend and assumed from the guide that meant that it was closed. (We later learnt, however, that it was not!) So this meant we had to heave heavily overloaded bags all the way to Koh Tao and back. Awesome.
Koh Tao was a lovely little tropical paradise island. We were only meant to be there 4 days - we ended up staying 10! While there I did my open water and advanced PADI dive course while mike did a rock climbing course (you‘ll have to ask him the ins and outs!). The diving was great, im now hooked - although im afraid my underwater photography skills leave something to be desired!!!
We had such a lovely group, with Scandy, our awesome instructor. Didn’t see any sharks but saw some very cool fish and creatures. On the night dive I made a bit of a schoolboy error…I had spent the day throwing my kit in and putting it on in the sea (to save my back) but cos I would already have a weight belt on I had to grab it as I hit the water. For some reason, tho, on the night dive this fact managed to evade me, and so I jumped in, not thinking where my bcd (buoyancy control device, ie when blown up - lifejacket) was, and suddenly realised I was in pitch black water, no concept of where up was, wearing a weight belt….!!!! So, in a panic, I scrabbled manically and managed to come up and faceplant the oxygen tank!! So, so painful - cut my nose!! Lol. But again, got over it.
From Koh Tao we headed back to land, got a night train to butterworth (a fellow traveller informed me on the train the next morning that we had passed thru a war zone - something about a car bomb in south Thailand - and also the most bombed train station in the world!!! I was not amused to learn this!) From BW we then got a bus (which took half as long as the train - all very strange) down to KL. Had quite a funny moment as we arrived, bought the bus ticket and thought we had just over an hour to get some food etc - didn’t occur to us that we’d crossed a time zone! So all these locals were dragging us away with our bags half on and balancing hot cups of coffee etc!
And I’m done! Yay, finally got you all up to speed. Will do KL n Singapore later . We are actually in Oz now, really really love it, will tell you all about it soon! Hope you are all well, tons of love, and sorry again for slacking!!! Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
