We caught the archipelago ferry from Stockholm to Finnhamn on Sunday - 3 hour ride very scenic with lots of stops. The weather in Stockholm was awful - we stood in the rain for about an hour waiting for the ferry - no shelter - quite unbelievable for a country with such bad weather to have no provision for shelter! Needless to say it did not assist my flu - every time I think I am almost over it then I get wet and/or cold again and back to where I started. Our stay here in Finnhamn has been disappointing both from a weather perspective and from the accommodation perspective. It is my first time in a youth hostel and it will most definitely be the last - it is like camping in the cold and wet and not something that I enjoy.
However the scenery is lovely - not that we have been able to get out much due to the rain. Today is sunny thankfully but still around 15 degrees but we are back on the ferry to Stockholm at 2pm for two nights.
We were able to use the guest kitchen and did cook a light meal last night which we enjoyed with the rest of the bottle of French champagne that I brought with from Vezernay - thank you Jean Yves de Carlini it was delicious.
There are some nice walks here but we have hardly been out so not able to enjoy them. There is a nice restaurant on the island - 15 minutes walk from the hostel - where we have had a couple of nice Swedish meals including meatballs and also fried fresh herring, both of which I enjoyed. However vegetables and fruit seem unavailable and I am looking forward to being able to have a more normal diet again.
Friday will take me to Budapest and the weather forecast so far is looking much better than here so fingers crossed.
