We had breakfast at our B&B in Agrigento old town and set off quite early for the Valley of the Temples just 5 minutes out of town. Lucky first Sunday of the month is free so no entry fee for us but there were guys there offering their services as guides in English for Euro60 which is nearly $100 and that is what we paid for our accommodation at a very nice B&B. We did not accept their offer and instead took a brochure and guided ourselves. The weather was kind and it actually became very warm after a cool start.
Quite an amazing place with tombs, ancient temples dating back as far as 600BC all spread over a very large area so 2 hours walking involved in seeing most of what there was to see. It is in varying states of decay - some restored quite well and other areas just look sad as there is clearly no money to try to restore.
It was (supposed to be) a 1.5 hour trip from there to Syracusa but between a horrific thunder storm, roadworks, getting lost (more than once) and more mountain top towns (I dont mind if I never see another one again!) it took us over 5 hours to make our way. We did stop on a beach for a picnic lunch of fruit and cheese for about half an hour. It rained almost all the way which made it quite a challenge with the poor signage. Lucky we found some kind people in a number of the mountain towns who tried to help us. Now I know why people thought we were insane to drive around Sicily...
We have 2 nights now in Syracusa which has a lovely island Ortigia which we will explore tomorrow (just over the bridge 200m from our B&B) and give ourselves a break from driving. Just been out for another reasonably ordinary meal and still hoping to find a memorable one.
