So, it has been a long time, but we survived the Carnival of Rio. It is difficult to think where to begin but I will try to do my best. The Carnival in Rio in a strange mixture of italian carnival parade, with the rhytms of african influenced Samba, but everything is bigger and fancier, parties are simple but yet wild. No borders are crossed - Brazil still remains a catholic country even though it has a wild reputation. Finnish midsummer or every weekend in Iceland might deserve the wildlife status more then this party. Anyhow, no regrets. It was amazing as it should. People were dancing all over the city in block parties, apparently only thing you really need for a party a pair of drums. Preferible one singer too, big stereos and a car to carry it on, and people will start shaking Samba in a flash. Crossdressing is popular, and vappu-style clothing also. The parade is a 12 hours march, on Sunday and Monday night, where the best Samba schools (who come from Favelas, the slumm areas of Rio ) compete for the status. This year the winner was amazing BeijaFlor, which we also saw on live, on 3 o'clock of Tuesday morning. More to come, once we get cash out from an ATM, and can pay for the Internet cafe. Tomorrow that is, we hope.
