Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
Today is one of the hottest days we have had at 35 degrees. We planned to explore the southern end of the park today, trying to get an early start to beat the heat. The Domes was the first walk we did which showcased what makes the Bungle Bungles famous. It is world heritage listed as being the most outstanding example of cone karst sandstone in the world. The banding of the domes is due to differences in clay content and porosity of the sandstone layers: the orange bands consist of oxidised iron compounds in layers that dry out too quickly for cyanobacteria to multiply; the grey bands are composed of cyanobacteria growing on the surface of layers of sandstone where moisture accumulates.
Next we walked Piccaninny Creek up to the lookout. It had fairly good views of the area.
We then trekked over to Cathedral Gorge. I was looking forward to this the most but was a bit disappointed. Mainly due to the stagnant water, where I was expecting to see a nice swimming hole with a possible waterfall. The ampitheatre side of it was great and it was a nice cool area out of the hot sun. This would be great to see during the wet season but I think they may close the park during the wet.
