Nikki's Travels
Hi everyone, hows sunny england?!?
We've just had our best few days in Australia yet in Fraser Island with a group of 11 people made up of the 3 of us, 1 Irish girl called Ema, 1 Turkish guy referred to as 'Turk', and 6 Israelian guys who I have no idea what they were called but they didn't seem to mind and niether did i mind that they all thought my name was 'Nikita' or 'Ocean Girl' because of my blue eyes! Fine by me i can think of worse nicknames!
We set off from Rainbow beach in our 4x4 truck and spent the first hour trying to translate names which clearly didn't go all that well! On the first day it was raining but we were too busy trying to hold on whilst driving over the bumpy beach tracks to notice and later went swimming in the rain at lake wabby which was a great laugh. Luckily the rain stopped in the evening when we set up camp with another group from our hostel who were mostly Swedish and pretty soon we were having a multi-cultural party on the beach!!! The evening went from Salsa dancing to breakdancing (i was rubbish at both!) and ended up with Israelian Trance and a glowstick dance - VERY bizarre but hugely funny!!
The next day started at 5.45 AM! not my idea but one of the swedish guys insisted we got up to see the sunrise. After 10 minutes of us girls refusing to get up one of the lads played 'I've got sunshine on a rainy day' from the truck at full blast until we got out of our tent so we eventually got up! After our rude wake up call we packed up the camp and headed to lake mckenzie which was the most stunning place ever. We spent a few hours swimming in the lake, sunbathing and playing frisby and then moved onto the shipwreck site on 75 mile beach which was cool to see again and had very clearly eroded since i first saw it about 9 years ago.
On the second night we camped further up the beach and had another party and bbq and this time woke up at 6am (almost a lie in compared to the first day!) and spent the day at Eli Creek. At breakfast i happened to bump into another Fromee!!! Bryany!! Her group were parked up next to ours, another very random meeting!!
On the drive back to the Ferry port we nearly tipped the truck because of the deep sand and high tracks but thankfully survived and left the island. Last night back at the hostel the Isralian guys cooked all of us a massive feast called Shaksuka which was so good even i loved it! We were cooked for and looked after by them the whole trip it was brilliant!
Our next trip will be a 2 day 2 night cruise around the Whitsunday islands and the 3 of us are hoping its as much fun! For now though its off Dolphin Kayaking (oh its a hard life) and then back to the beach- Sorry you lot must hate me!!
I hope things are good at home, thanks again for all your messages its good hearing from you (even if it is hate mail - thanks ruthy!!)
Love to all,
Nikki (aka Nikita, or Ocean Girl)
