Nikki's Travels
Hey again everyone,
Well I'm in Singapore now after an early departure from Australia because of near enough 2 and a half weeks of non stop rain and constant rain forecast for the rest of our time there - no thankyou that is not what i came to Australia for!! I had no idea that the rainy season actually meant full on rain for 2 complete months!
Despite the rain we did have a brilliant last few weeks in Aus, firstly having surf lessons in the town of 1770 which was excellent and by the end i was fully standing up! then crusing around the Whitsunday islands on a sailing yacht for 3 days and finally staying in the Rainforest of Cape Tribulation near Cairns - ALL IN THE RAIN!!
The Whitsundays cruise was brilliant, our boat (not really sure if its actually a yacht??!!) was called the 'British Defender' and came 6th in the round the world race a few years back. When we were racing along the boat tipped so far on its side the low side railings were submerged in the sea and we were all clinging on to the high side railings on the opposite side trying desperately not to tip off into the water, it was actually quite scary and i think i may have screamed once or twice! At this point the belting rain wasn't really making much difference since we were getting soaked by the waves crashing on us anyway (i'll try to load some very attractive photos of us all in our yellow sailing macs for you - you won't be jealous of this one!). At one point we did have dolphins jumping around our boat which cheered us all up loads!
During the trip we would have been mostly sunbathing if it wasn't for the rain and I have to admit it was a bit upsetting being sat on what is voted the most gorgeous beach in the world 'Whitehaven Beach' in our anoraks shivering in the cold and laughing at ourselves! Still we had a brilliant time snorkelling, sailing and mostly getting drunk. On the last night our crew felt sorry for us because of all the rain so took us to the 5 star Hamiliton resort so we could have proper showers (not 30 second ones which was all we were allowed on the boat!) and enjoy the swimming pools, spas and bars and basically we all got very drunk again and it was brilliant! Sleeping on the boat in tiny bunks with only 1 foot headroom was not so much fun though.
Back on dry land it took me about 2 days to stop swaying from the motion of the boat and i felt drunk all the time which was strange! After deciding that we had had enough of the rain we re-scheduled our flights and then rushed up to Cairns to do our Cape Tribulation trip. This time the rain almost added to the effect since we were in the rainforest anyway, at least thats what we told ourselves! The best part of the trip was seeing wild crocodiles on the river and trekking through the rainforests. On one of our walks we had to cross through a knee deep river running across the beach which was infested with stingers and had a warning sign as crocodiles were recently spotted there - i have never run through water so fast in my life!!!!
Now in Singapore and guess what .... its raining!! At least it was when we arrived but the last 2 days have been stinking hot and humid so now we're complaining about that instead! Last night we did a 'night safari' which was brilliant, it was essentially a zoo but a night time one where the animals are alot more active so you see more.
Tonight we fly out to Bangkok in search of gorgeous beaches and the sun!
I'll let you know how it goes?!
Missing you all, take care
Nikki xx
