Hola from Costa Rica.
Arrived at the turtle project which is about 50metres from a very long and empty palm fringed beach. Not the usual white sand, its dark, but a lovely beach all the same. It's hot and humid and often misty looking along the beach. There's hardly anybody on the enormous beach and I'm generally having a dip in the ocean to cool off 3 times a day.
During the daytime I have been helping with building a new hatchery for the turtle nests. The breeding season is just starting. We patrol the beach every night, a 12km speed march at ungodly hours, to look for freshly laid nests. When we find them we relocate them until they hatch, away from poachers. Sometimes poachers have already robbed the eggs from the nests before we arrive. They get good money for them as the eggs are an aphrodisiac.
I was the only english person for a while and there were already established groups of other nationalities when I arrived at this project, so it took me a bit of time to settle in, and to get amongst them. I am speaking a lot of spanish, but they speak so quickly it's really difficult, but I'm learning alot.
This morning I saw my first turtle. It was 7 little baby turtles, just hatched, that we set into the ocean. They were sooooo cute, flapping their little flippers around, it was amazing.
So all good here so far. Another 2 and a half weeks here at the project before a final week travelling around Costa Rica before flying back to the UK early August.
Bye for now every body. Take care and have fun. Nicky x
