Well I'm back home now after completing 3 weeks on the turtle project on the pacific coast of Costa Rica, several dives further up the pacific coast and then exploring the Monteverde and Arenal areas, before returning to the capital to fly home.
Saw an adult turtle nesting on the beach and saw newly hatched baby turtles being released into the ocean. Enjoyed being able to cool off in the sea on the lovely beach where I saw dolphins playing near the shore once. Enjoyed the nightly beach patrols of 12 kms walks and explored the local national park on days off; seeing monkeys, sloths, racoons etc.
After the turtle project I travelled further up the pacific coast to spend the best part of a week at Playas del Coco for some more diving, the first time in the pacific ocean for me. The visibility wasn't so good and the coral was almost non existent compared to the Caribbean side of central america however I got to see some good marine life. There were lots of porcupinefish and white tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, sting rays, lots of eels, octopus, lobster etc. I'm now up to 87 dives since qualifying and am looking to get my rescue course done at some point later this year.
Then travelled inland to the Monteverde area and saw lots of wildlife in the rainforest and did some ziplining, 15 in total including 3 huge long ones across the top of the canopy and a tarzan swing which was exhilarating and got a few screams out of our group! Also visited La Fortuna to see the Arenal volcano (one of the most active in the world) but unfortunately the cloud was against us so instead we got to relax in the volcanic hot springs. Followed by a relaxing safari wildlife float down river, this brought the activities to an end before returning to San Jose for the flight back to the UK.
So, an amazing 3 months away exploring 4 countries but got tired of living out of a bag and counted that I stayed in 20 different places, so in summary am greatly enriched from all the experiences but exhausted and looking forward to catching up with friends back here in blighty and being able to watch the Olympics through August ! Next trip is cycling 500km in Russia from St Petersburg to Moscow.
Meanwhile bye for now and take care. Nicky x
