Hi folks, hope all´s well with all of you. Thanks for all your various messages.
Well it was sad to say good bye to friends from Utila and to leave the island after 4 good weeks. The past week for me has been a journey to travel through Nicaragua (to get to my next project in Costa Rica) but to try to see bits of the country on the way too. It has been good but tiring and has gone something like this; 1 minibus day trip, 1 car journey, 12 taxi rides, 8 bus journeys, 1 flight, 2 boat trips and 6 different beds in 8 nights !!! No wonder I´m feeling a little jaded.
Other than the travel, which by bus you do get to see the countryside, the more interesting bits have been 2 days based in Granada with Christine (friend from Utila) including visits to a museum, up the bell tower of a church, and a day at Lago Apoyo which is a volcano crater filled with water. Had a good swim there and a kayak and a generally chilled day.
We then travelled to Ometepe Island. The island is 2 volcano cones in the middle of the huge Lago Nicaragua. We had a couple of nights there and swam in the lake, hired bikes, saw petroglyphs (Mayan stone carvings), hiked on the lower slopes of one of the volcanos, heard howler monkeys (although didnt see them), and generally had a good time.
I then said farewell to Christine and had a painful border crossing into Costa Rica, last night in a provincial colonial town, and into San Jose this morning. I meet the turtle project people for induction/orientation here tomorrow and then we travel out to the project site the following day. I am really looking forward to getting settled in one place for 4 weeks and not moving !
