Oi!
Apparently this is the way to greet people in Brazil!
We arrived on Monday lunchtime after a mammoth 16hr trip. We had a little explore after finding our hostel which is hippy and a bit shabby, but very friendly and there is lots of cheap beer! Yesterday wasnot great weather-wise so we went to Maracana, the home of football in Brazil, which was a great experience for Nicky even if it is not as modern as English stadiums. Nicky had a great guide who spoke to him personally in Engllish because everyone else was Brazilian. Clare meanwhile, acquainted herself with a nearby bench and the guidebook..!
An interesting pub quiz fact - The Maracana is painted blue and white on the outside because the President lost a bet in the 1950 world cup final where they lost to Uruguay and so had to paint their national colours on the outside.
We have been on a few crazy bus journeys already with the F1 bus drivers of Brazil, who think they are constantly in a race with something. The rest of yesterday was spent sightseeing in churches and museums.
What we have noticed more than anything is the traffic, noise and huge numbers of poor people. It seems that the whole city is organised around the roads, which is a shame because there is some beautiful architecture and amazing beaches, all of which are ruined by being right next to really busy roads and modern high rise buildings.
Can you Adam and Eve it? It's hammered it down all of today so the walk down Copacabana beach wasn't quite what it should have been! After a few hours of walking and a slight escapade finding the bus station to buy our tickets to Sao Paulo for Friday (clearly there are two bus stations and we went to the wrong one...!) and we're now in the hostel drinking beer and escaping the rain.
Anyway, we'll post some photos soon and will keep you updated. We hope you're all well.

Take care,
Clare & Nicky
