We collect the car late in the afternoon and after driving around in circles for a couple of hours (I’m sure I recognise that airport) we finally get on tract and make our way to Newcastle. Newcastle was a nice beachy peninsula, but really just a much needed rest stop for our journey up to Coffs harbour.
We felt brave in Coffs harbour and got out our tent. I told Ben that I wouldn’t camp if we didn’t keep the tent closed at all times though just in case. Camping was a good idea because we managed to meet a few Australians that gave us tips to visit the likes of Red Rock on the way up to Byron Bay. In Coffs harbour we went for a walk to Mutton Bird island for some whale spotting and managed to spot some sperm whales! On the campsite we had a great aussie bar-b-q , I felt like I was on Neighbours! there were people all around the bar-b of all ages chatting like they’ve known each other for years, drinking lager and being jolly…I loved it!
When we reached Byron bay we were a little disappointed. It was sooooo touristy, full of teenagers with huge sunglasses on twice the size of their head (a new fashion I’ve missed). Drinking and surfing seemed to be the plan for most of the youngsters, so we decided that we could do this in Newquay and headed back to the quaint Lennox head instead with the other old farts.
Lenox head was another beachy touristy place but there were a lot less people there (not spoilt). And the resturants were lovely. We went to a Thai BYO restaurant and I ate Morten Bay Bugs (tasted like a lobster but looked like an ugly prawn). The weather became unsettled so we decided to drive further north rather than staying two nights here.
We bypassed Brisbane and Surfers Paradise with the thought that we could always stay in these places on the way back down south and headed for Noosa Heads. Fran (my mother- in –law) recommended wisely that we should stay in the Halse Lodge hostel here. She stayed there two years ago. The hostel was amazing! And Noosa Heads is sooo pretty. We even got a free glass of wine when we arrived at the hostel! The area has a lovely beach, and is particularly good for shopping for surf clothing. When we had breakfast we got up close and personal with four parrots whom decided to land on our table and try and eat the honey (the cheeky pretty things!) ..so cute though.
