From Noosa Heads we decided to go to the Australian Zoo (the one that used to contain Steve Irwin and his crocs). Unfortunately Steve had died a few weeks ago swimming with the sting ray (Crikey- someone should have mentioned that they were scary before we swam with them, everyday for about two months in the south pacific, we must have swam with the friendly ones- eh?!!!!).
The zoo was fantastic. We managed to stroke koala and wallabies, feed elephants and watch some wild shows with snakes, crocs and birds. We also saw the claws on the Cassowary (scary). The place was fun and educational (I’m not stepping anywhere near the river banks in the North of Oz and I know how to treat Ben if he decides to play with a snake- you never can predict what Ben might do next). The craziest animal that we saw in the zoo was Katie from Tahiti, Cook Islands and Fiji. We weren’t expecting to bump into someone we knew in the middle of OZ!!
The following day we booked a whale watching trip and a day trip to Fraser Island and then set out to meet Lyn and Lyle ( they became friends with Ben’s parents when they lived in Nigeria). They were lovely to us (we felt like family). They cooked for us and gave us a really nice room to sleep in (with an en-suite bathroom and kitchen!!!) Their house is by the river in amongst some trees, so there is abundant wildlife there. We fed a Kookaburra and Butchers birds and talked about the tree snakes and black snakes that visit the garden (apparently the tree snake arrived there the day after we left them). It was also good to hear about their travelling experiences. From Lyn and Lye’s house we went on our excursions to Fraser Island and for whale watching.
The whale watching was amazing! We got so close I was squirted in the face by the whales blow hole- yeuk! We tried to take photos but mostly managed to take pictures of the sea- ooops. We saw a strange mammal here to, one by the name of Heidi (from Cook island/ Fiji and New Zealand). It’s strange how we are bumping into friends in Australia.
We had to get up early for our journey in Fraser Island. As you probably already know, Ben is not that good in the morning. We were driving towards Harvey Bay for our pick up when Ben suddenly starts to curse. We had chosen this particular tour company because it seemed that we could do quite a bit of swimming and he had forgotten to pack his swimming trunks!!!!! Can you believe it? We had to detour for 20 minutes to get them and only just made the pick up within seconds!!!!! Fraser Island was bumpy! The island is a huge beach, and as it hadn’t rained for a while so there was many a bump in the track. We saw many tourist sites, had a huge buffet meal and swam in the luxurious crystal clear lake with white sand (90% silica).
The next day we went fishing with Lyn and Lyle and caught loads of fish! Well actually we didn’t catch any that was a fisherman’s tale, but- hey, it was fun.
