Yo yo yo,
We've made our way down into Tegucigalpa in the heart of Honduras after a mildly inconvenient spell in Utila and a couple of stopovers in La Ceiba.
We were led away from Copán in a 15 seater microbus containing up to 23 people, which was fun, and then took several more buses on our way to La Ceiba on the north coast for a night's stopover before continuing to Utila of the famous Bay Islands in the morning. In our time there we went to Pizza Hut - we're not proud of ourselves, but it was £4 for two meals with drinks. We also found Optimus Prime (not in Pizza Hut).
Utila is a small island whose only purpose appears to be to house diving centres. We found a nice looking one and I signed up for a 4-day Open Water Diving course which would start the next day. Vicky didn't. That night we went to a pub quiz that never was - to us that was a victory. I turned up at the dive centre the next day but was told I'd have to see the doctor before I could dive due to my asthma. Unfortunately it was Saturday and the clinic was closed at the weekend so we went to the beach instead. Over the next couple of days I learnt all of the necessary theory in preparation for diving on Monday, just in time to be told by the doctor that I was not fit to dive - apparently, if I try it I might die or something.
We tried to get the next boat to the mainland (we'd pretty much exhausted everything else there was to do on the island - eating, drinking, beaching, swimming and sleeping), but were told it had been cancelled due to Hurricane Dean. Weather reports were suggesting we'd get strong winds, plenty of rain and maybe some flooding. The mayor of the island was said to be suggesting that everyone have 2 days worth of water and supplies. We slept through an entirely uneventful night and left the next day.
One more night in La Ceiba followed (more Pizza Hut, though we did honestly look for somewhere else this time), and then onto Tegús in the morning. We got a taxi from the hotel to the bus terminal in La Ceiba, only to discover it was the wrong one. We were told we could get a taxi to the right one for 30 lempiras (about 80p) and jumped in. The taxi promptly exited the terminal, crossed the road and dropped us off on the other side.
After yet another Pizza Hut meal (it's just so damn cheap) we spent last night in a shed-cum-bedroom with a shared, cold water, roach infested bathroom in a hotel that locked up for the night at 10pm and closed its bar (we couldn't get out to get fresh water). This morning we moved onto a clean, indoor room with a private, hot water bathroom for the same price.
We're off to explore the local National Park tomorrow, should be fun. Apparently there are monkeys.
Speak again soon,
Love, Nick 'n' Vic
