Hi,
Just a quickie today, not much has happened since the last one. We now find ourselves in Panama City, the last stop on the Central American leg (Colombia next...).
San José: Volcán Poás, to the north of the capital, is an active volcano with a nice, easy path leading up to the main crater to let you look inside without all the hassle of hiking it. It's all very impressive, and we saw a couple of squirrels. And a rabbit. None of these were in the crater.
Next, across the border into Panama and onto the mountain town of Boquete. A nice enough town, a bit too American (bit of a problem across Panama), with lots of rivers. We also hiked for an hour to get to Parque Nacional Volcán Barú and managed 90 minutes of a 4 hour trail before a fast-flowing river blocked our path. We didn't fancy swimming it. It then started raining and we got drenched anyway.
Then onto Panama City. Not much to tell really, huge roads that take an hour to cross, plenty of dirt-cheap Chinese restaurants and lots of skyscrapers. We had a stroll down the Causeway at the end of the canal, everything was closed, but the views were nice. Today we went to a zoo with no animals and a national park with no animals (except for about a billion ants). We're convinced they've all gone inside for the rainy season, unlike us: we got drenched waiting for a bus on the way back.
Tonight we're going to "the only English pub in Panama", just out of curiosity.
We have one more day here and then we fly to Cartagena in Colombia. Wish us luck.
Love,
Nick and Vic
