Our only real destination in Honduras is Copan Ruinas, as for some reason we didn't feel as drawn to Honduras as we did with the other Central American countries.
This very day marked 365 days of travelling, of being together 24/7 and of living out of a backpack. We tried to look for somewhere decent for breakfast but San Pedro Sula's bus station didn't offer much as all the locals were eating fried chicken and fries. In the end we thought, let's get pizza and a smoothie. So thats how we started the 365th day of travelling! Classy!
After a chicken bus journey and Helen telling the driver to watch the road on several occasions we arrived at the very cute village of Copan. The streets of Copan are covered in cobble stones and is a really cute tranquil town. The entire town speaks timeless peace! Our hostel was also extremely cute, and as we were the only guests there we had run of the place!
After a wander around the town, and people watching in the Central Park we further celebrated our travelling anniversary with mojitos and nachos before heading to a German microbrewery. Yes, you heard right, a German microbrewery in the middle of Honduras.
The guy who runs the microbrewery is German and somewhat a local celebrity as the entire time we were there the locals didn't stop pouring in through the door to take photos of him and his draught pump!
After a good nights sleep, on our full day in Copan, our first stop was Macaw Mountain where there's loads of Macaws who have been recovered from captivity. We even got to hold some Macaws for photographs, and Nick got into a fight with his Blue and Gold Macaw leaving holes in his t-shirt.
Both of us are now fed up of wholesome fare, fast food and trying local foods so we just headed to Picame for the best salad EVER as you can pick and mix what you want! Yum! If you're ever in Copan, visit Picame!
The afternoon was spent at the Copan Ruinas, a UNESCO site Mayan ruins. Since the Spanish conquest of Honduras, the ruins were left to be overgrown by rainforest. Apparently, Copan has the best hieroglyphic inscriptions in the Mayan world. Despite all the history and historical facts, Nick was slowly losing his patience with Helen as she was more interested in the Macaws flying free than the actual ruins! The ruins were awesome, but you can only see so many temples, ruins etc to fully appreciate them as they're all becoming a blur and looking very similar now.
The evening was spent in a highly recommended local restaurant, where we had a major communication breakdown with the staff as the entire menu was in Spanish. Nobody spoke English and as a result everyone stared at us for the rest of the evening!
The following day we caught our shuttle bus to Antigua, Guatemala!
