So leaving hectic Mexico City we headed north to Monterrey to see my very good friend Laura who was my roomate and best friend when i studied in the states. I had not seen her since she came to London 2 years before so was very excited to see her and meet all her family.
We arrived thur night and had a tradtional welcome meal with her and all her friends (who were very excited to meet us!! felt quite famous). Then we headed to a bar where we met even more friends!! Fri we had a lay in and then we went to meet Laura for lunch and she showed us around her uni. Its huge!! and there are random deers, peacocks and ducks just wondering around. Friday was another crazy night out, we danced till 4am!
For the weekend we headed into Monclova which is Lauras home town. We had lunch with her parents then laura drove us to the desert (as you do). It was beautiful and i was excited to see my first cactus (loser i know). Sat night we went out AGAIN and met MORE people! one guy came out just to meet us and take a picture with us, and the band made shout outs to us. Was a bit crazy. Sunday morning 15 (yes 15) family members came round to meet us and her mum made a massive traditional breakfast (tacos were yum) and her nan made a massive cake for us. They were all so lovely and made us feel so welcome and special. It was also really nice to meet Lauras family and spend some time with a mexican family after all the tourist things we had been doing all month. After seeing some of Monclova in the afternoon we headed home.
Monday night we returned some of the favor by making laura and her friends an english meal of bangers and mash and bread and butter pudding (they loved it!! lol). Tuesday Katy left for Missisippi which was odd as we had spent everyday together since June! lol. I missed her!! It did give me some time in the week to catch up with emails, send stuff home and book stuff for oz. Tues night me, laura and her mum headed to the highest point in Monterrey, Bishops house, up on a moutain and it was beautiful (her mum cried it was so stunning). It made me think about christmas it was all lite up like a bloody tree. We then went to Fundidora Park to see an art show and have a picnic. Was a really nice evening, her mum is just lovely and seeing how close those two were did make me miss my mum a lot!!
Wed Laura showed me around the city and we went to the Museum of Mexican History and then to the cinema to watch a very odd film about majicians (laura fell asleep!! lol). Thurs we went to a very famous waterfall that looks like a horses tail and then in the evening we met with some of Lauras friends and went to a Rodeo!!! it was amazing!!! i was well embrassed all night though as your not allowed to wear skirts and of course i turned up in a skirt and because i was from London (its like being the bloody queen if your from London) they let me in but perhaps it was more trouble then it was worth as the clown of the show quite liked my skirt and looking up it and embrassed me a lot! it was all good fun. The Rodeo was wicked - it was crazy. Those poor men getting thrown in the air and those poor bulls getting beaten around but it was a great cultural experience for me.
Friday Laura took me up a massive mountain called Chipinque overlooking the city, was stunning and took some good pics now my camera is finally with me (could write a whole journal just on the thing). Friday night we headed out to the main square and met some crazy mexicans who wanted to dance with me (because, of course, i was from London). It was a great night as was just me and Laura and i was a bit sad as was gonna miss her!!
Saturday we went to some more moutains, these ones are called Huasteca as they are flat - very odd looking. It was freezing and made me think how cold it must be at home!! We had another picnic and was sad as saw the red cross giving out clothes to the locals and i realised how poor some parts of mexico really are. I will never throw clothes out again! will always give to charity i promise. Katy arrived back in town sat night and after picking her up we all went out for a farewell dinner then it was an early night in prep for the massive journey ahead to oz.
I just want to say a massive thanks for Laura, her friends and her family (esp her mum who just looked after me like i was her own daughter, she is an amazing person) for making me feel so welcome, being so kind and looking after me so well. I met some many people (mr bean!! Joel, Leo, Luis and his beautiful wife, Juan (dada who drove 3 hours and waited 4 hours to bring me my camera!), Claudia, Etel and Linda (lol)....so many). You were all just lovely and Laura is so lucky to have you in her life but your all much more lucky to have her in yours, she is my angel.
So goodbye to you all and keep in contact - next stop is oz! xx
