After the jungle excitement of Planque, we headed to San Cristobal in a private bus which allowed us to stop off where we wanted which included an incredible waterfall in Chiapas (used in the film “the predator”). It was stunning! (reckon I over use that word, must be cause I get called it all the time). Actually it really was stunning and huge (another word I perhaps get called all the time?) and I was brave/stupid enough to walk under it! Was soooo loud! And I got soaked but was worth it, what an experience.
After another waterfall in Cascada de Agia azul and a VERY bending road 2 hour drive we arrived in San Cristobal, it was raining and the altitude (must be the altitude) really did us no favors as we got quite ill here (you feel drunk all the time, which maybe some people like but freaked me out) so here we just did some geeky city bus tour and ate to many doughnuts.
On the second day we decided not to let feeling rough ruin our day so we went with the group on tour to see the ´real Mexico´ first we saw some graveyards (to cheer us up??) but it was interesting as the graves are different colors depending on the deads age group, we also saw them semi digging them up (well I think they were digging them up but the tour leader just said they were cleaning the graves in preparation for day of the dead).
Next we walked through a crazy ass market and I felt like I was in a film as it was so far removed from normal life to me. Next was perhaps the best bit of the whole mex tour for me – the tour guide took us into a church but no ordinary church! This church is called Rituales, the floor was covered in candles, the smell was indescribable (in a good way) and the Mexicans were dressed in all their gear just sitting on the floor and praying. They also have this scary ritual where they use a chicken to remove bad elements from the soul, then kill the chicken (who apparently soaks up these vibes) to rid the bad elements! Well we actually saw this ritual and this poor chicken! The only fate worse is KFC.
After the jaw dropping church we went to a Mexican home and talk about basic!! But these people seem so happy does make you question the tangibles in life. We saw them weaving and tried all the traditional clothes on then had some home made tacos (deeeelish).
Next was Canyon del Sumidero which was stunning (theres that word again). We got to see crocodiles in their own habitat! And to close up for my liking!! Those things are huge! Saw more monkeys too, the small ones with curly tails. In the evening me and katy went for a lovely long meal and chatted for ages (how I don’t know, 5 months on still can chat non stop, no arguments either she cracks me up to much) – Katys decided to be a teacher when she gets back and I have decided I have no idea when I am going to do when I get back!!
Still in San Cristobal Katy attempted horse riding but was still too ill, and what with hail stones (not sunny all the time!) we did b***** all this day except prepare for the nightmare overnight bus we had that night to Puebla.
Puelba was similar to other cities we had visited so we decided to be lazy and just hop on a city tour and let the driver do all the hard work for us. Puebla is a small city surrounded by Volcanoes (which are active) with lots of stalls and cafes (which we though rude not to try! Nice doughnuts!!). After a lovely Thai dinner (getting sick of Mexican food) was an early night after the horrid 11 hour bus ride.
After an early morning and a siwft 2 hour bus ride we arrived in Mexico City!! This place is crazy ass!! The traffic is out of control, it needs to get punched in the face!! There are cars coming from every direction and I honestly feared for my life at times!! We thought it be safer to get on a tour bus rather than try and dodge one but 3 hours and a very numb bum later I was having second thoughts!! As geeky as these bus tours are though they are a wicked and lazy way to see everything. In the evening was well impressed with Katy who ate a massive Chinese with me (dinner not person)!! TGIs see ya laterz!
We had 4 days in Mexico city so did some catch up with ringing home and emails (er reply’s please??) and Katys decided to go see Stav in Mississippi so we tried to book that flight. We also had the very scary experience of getting our hair cut by a one woman show called Grace who could not speak any English! She was hilarious, we laughed so much and wouldn’t stop taking pictures of her, she thought we were crazy.
Our last day in Mexico City was day of the dead, it’s a national holiday here where they celebrate, well, the dead. It’s a huge festival here and we saw some odd things in the main square and just walked around taking it all in. On our last night we went to a very good Mexican show with Mexican musicians and dancers and some more chicken fighters!! (they love their chickens here).
The day we departed, Jesus (a friend I made whilst I was in the USA studying) picked us up from our hotel and took us around (after our lame attempts) taking us to the museum of anthology, a sinking church! and for lunch. We also met his lovely lovely family who spoilt us rotten then it was off to the airport!! Now were in Monterrey staying with Laura, my good good friend who was also my roommate when I was studying over in the states! Were here for 10 days (Katy 5 as shes off to Missisippi to get her sex on!! lol) so reckon there may be some partying to be had!!
