Nets and Ali in South America
We stayed in Huaraz a town really high up in the mountains for three nights . Theres wasnt much to do in the town itself however there were loads of excursions up into the snowcapped mountains to hike and even climb glaciers!!
Yesterday we went for a mountain hike up to lake 69 which is this stunning lagoon at circa 5,000m! Nat our tour leader had said it was the hardest hike she'd ever done (and shes been traveling for years) but we thought we'd give it a go..It nearly killed us!! We had to walk for miles up massive mountains and because we'd been at sea level the morning before, the altitude really hit us so we were struggling to breathe, stopping for breaks every 5 mins (much to our guides annoyance!) and Nets even started feeling really ill! Hours later ( 6.5 to be precise) we eventually got to the lagoon after about 1000 stops to catch our breath! We both agreed it was the hardest things we 've ever done but it was worth it - the photos are amazing and hopefully we'll get round to uploading some soon ;)
Most people only booked one activity however Anita and I (being overly
keen) booked to do the ice hike as well so despite our exhaustion, the next day we were on a bus back up to 5,000m+ to find a glacier to ice pick our way up and then abseil back down ;) We had to hike another 1hr to get the glacier which was really hard due to the altitude which makes it super hard to breathe. We then took it in turns to go up 20m - which doesn't sound a lot but when your trying to drag yourself up a vertical piece of ice with two heavy ice picks, its enough!! Once we'd all done that we climbed a bit higher to a little ice cave which was really pretty.
