We woke early again this morning and were driving out the park by 8.20am. We stopped at the servo for some bread and ran into some people from the rally, Geoff and Cynthia, in their R Series. They would easily be in their 70’s and travel everywhere with their pet galah ‘Dodge’. We headed off and our first stop was Balladonia to look at the wreckage of the NASA satellite, Skylab, which had crashed in the area in 1979. Kelley had seen a piece of the wreck on the roof of the servo when we stopped for petrol on our way over, but thought it wasn’t real until we read about it in a book a few days later. We had a quick look through the museum, before having morning tea with Geoff and Cynthia. We left there and headed for Caiguna. We had read there was a blowhole in the ground here, that if you stood over you felt the rush of cool air.
We found it about 5 kms before Caiguna. It basically is a big hole in the ground. When you stand to one side of it you can feel the air form under the ground coming up and it’s as cold as an air conditioner.
As we travelled through Caiguna we lost 45 minutes due to time zones. We had lunch beside the car again at the roadhouse in Caiguna. As we were already running late, we had to push through to get past Madura.
We pulled into a free camp site called Moodini Bluff and get up camp near a picnic table. We had to set up the pop up tent for our shower and toilet. We had to use the washing up tub for all of us, but we were clean enough. It was nice to be away from so many people like in the Caravan Park and it was very quiet. Neil had a quick chat with the people in a caravan near us and learnt he had crossed the Nullarbor 50 years ago in a beetle and his brother in a mini. It was corrugated roads back then from Ceduna to Balladonia. William fought us to go to sleep as he had a late sleep in the car
We were in bed early as we wanted to get a fair way tomorrow. Hopefully past Yalata and possibly Nundroo.
