We were up early this morning and it was quite cold. We were on our way by 8.10am. Neil was driving first and in a space of about 3-4 kms there were 4 dead wombats on the road. We are also disappointed to report that on both our travels across the Nullarbor, we didn’t see one camel.
We got into Ceduna at about 11.30am and had to go through Fruit Fly quarantine first. Today was also our first day that we had mobile phone reception since leaving Norseman, so our phones were beeping as we pulled into town.
We went to the information centre first to get some leaflets on the surrounding areas. We also got pointed in the direction of the Laundromat as we hadn’t washed in a few days and were running low on clothes. Once we left the Laundromat, we went and grabbed some fish and chips for lunch and sat in the park by the water. They were the best fish and chips we have ever had, and also cheap. William thought it was great fun to move all the council’s witches hats around the park but couldn’t move the one that was nearly as tall as him, although he tried very hard. We fed the seagulls our leftover chips so Will had something to chase. We wanted to head towards Streaky Bay for the night, however being Easter all the Caravan Parks were all booked out. We’ll just have to come back. We did our grocery shopping and headed out of Ceduna.
We had looked up a few places in our camps book and figured we’d see how we travelled as to which park we pulled up in. We decided on a place called Minnipa. We were amused to pulled into the park, to a sign that read “Welcome to Minnipa. Apex Park Home of the Concrete Crappa” and sure enough there was an old style concrete water tank that was converted into public toilets, with a big painted sign saying Concrete Crappa. Surprisingly, they were quite clean.
We set up camp here, although it was a little bit scary. We were the only people in the park and we didn’t know anything about the area. It didn’t help when a random man appeared from the bush carrying a bag of rubbish and wheeling a suitcase along. We have no idea where he came from.
We had a very slack dinner as we were still full from our fish and chips. We were also in bed at the same time as William as he had kept us up a bit the night before. Before closing up the tent we noticed we had a visitor – a grey cat. Thankfully it was a domestic cat, not feral, as it had a collar on.
William also decided that he wanted to sleep with us tonight; it probably was a good idea as it was absolutely freezing. As we had no power, we couldn’t plug in our heater. He had quite bad nappy rash also and wasn’t feeling the best.
We are hoping to make it to Peterborough tomorrow. We drove through there on our way over and there are trains all through the town. We think William will enjoy it.
