UTAH - NATIONAL PARKS AND SNOW ! (9th-11th Oct)
Well it had to happen. After mentioning several times how great the weather has been, yesterday it turned nasty. The temperature had dropped 20 degrees overnight as we headed for Bryce Canyon. After our visit we set off for our next destination which included a 40 mile drive over a pass. It started to snow. As we climbed higher the snow got heavier and we finished up driving in a blizzard. The temperature dropped to 16 degrees f (-9 in real money). We could not see more that 50 yards ahead. After 20 miles all the traffic ahead started turning back so we followed them. It was a scary moment but fortunately we were both wearing our brown trousers. Gwen was driving, she kept her cool and did a great job getting us back to safer ground. We finished up back in the town Kanab we had left that same morning. However the day finished well as we booked into a lovely motel the Parry Lodge. It is quite famous as Kanab used to be the Hollywood of Utah and many film and TV westerns were filmed near here and all the stars used to stay here.
Southern Utah does not have a lot going for it apart from its National Parks and we seem to have visited the main ones. We've been to the Arches National Park, Monument Valley (where many John Wayne films were made) and Bryce Canyon which must be the most beautiful and spectacular of them all. In fact as I write we are travelling through another one - Zion. We also visited a "place" called Four Corners. It is the only location in America where 4 states intersect (Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico) and if you lie on the ground with your arms and legs akimbo you can be in all 4 states at the same time. (see photos). I don't have the language or vocabulary to describe all the National Parks. They are all different and in their own way well worth seeing. (see photos). The adjective "awesome" comes to mind but that is a very overused word here. I sometimes think that is the only adjective Americans know. Everything is awesome. It doesn't matter what the event or situation. Falling off your bike, the size of your pizza or the performance of your favourite baseball team - it is always awesome.
Now heading for Vegas !
