New York (18th - 22nd Sept)
Arrived in New York City on Thursday from Boston via Amtrak. Spent most of the remainder of that day walking through Greenwich Village, Little Italy etc, had an excellent meal in an Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village called Trattoria Spagetto. We spent three full days in New York, two of those mainly in Central Park. Our hostel, the Central Park Hostel, was located very close to the north west part of the park. (Our room was tiny and very expensive but was all we could find at this time of year.) One afternoon we spent sunbathing after I had been for a jog round the park reservoir ! We also visited the Met but to be honest only got as far as the shop as going any further seemed too daunting and tiring at that time because of the queues of people. The "recommended" entry fee to the Met is $20 but apparently most New Yorkers pay no more than $1 ! We returned to the Park the following day. I think spending a Sunday in Central Park on a glorious sunny day must be one of life's great experiences. We hired bikes which had no brakes or gears and cycled around the park along with thousands of other joggers, cyclists, roller bladers etc. There are so many things going on. In one corner you have a chess competition, in another part you have people playing baseball, there is an authors' tent, people boating, picnicing, private parties. We just missed David Blaine's next stunt - hanging upside down from a scaffolding in the skating rink ! We spent a lot of time in the Time Square/Broadway district not necessarily by choice. One evening we went to the Cort Theatre to see a comedy spoof of John Buchan's 39 Steps (having bought half price tickets earlier that day). Another evening we went to see a new film starring Ricky Gervais called Ghost Town. On our last evening we went on an evening bus tour of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, surprise surprise the bus left from Time Square. The population of Brooklyn is 4 million and if it was a city it would be the 5th largest in the USA. !
