We got The Ghan down to Alice Springs which was a good journey as wehad time to relax and look at the scenery.
We went with Adventure Tours for a 2 day trip to Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. This was a good way to do it as there was a lot of driving involved. We climbed to the rim of Kings Canyon which was hard work in the heat but was amazing to look at the views and to see the canyon itslef. We moved on to Uluru and saw sunset over this and Kata Tjuta, with icy beers! We camped out in the bush but had a nice bbq dinner round a campfire. We had to get up at 4.40 to get to Uluru for sunrise. We did a 7km walk by 9am - how often does that happen?! It was good to see the changing colours of the rock. We then went to Kata Tjuta and walked up the gorge in the centre. The cliff faces went up so high around us. It made us feel so small! The Valley of the winds was another walk there but it got closed as it was too hot (over 36 degrees)!
The heat here is more bearable than Darwin as it is dryer rather than humid.
We also visited the School of the Air when we were in Alice (much to Neil's dismay!). This was really interesting to see how children in the outback learn and we got to observe a lesson in progress. It used to be done over the radio but it is now done via the internet and webcams. it looks kind of like Blue Peter, with the art and crafts!
