We arrived in Darwin quite late at night and it was still really hot! The hostel is really nice - a pool in the roof!
We were collected by the Wilderness Tours at 6.30am. There are 8 of us who have to sit in the back of 4WD - very cosy! We drove out to Kakadu national park, which is the size of Switzerland. We were taken to various places in the park over the course of 3 days. We trekked up escarpments and waterfalls, saw sun rises and sun sets. We also swam in the various pools (where there are no crocs!). It was really hard work as it got up to 40 degrees at the top of some of these places, but it was worth it. We got to see so much that we wouldn't have done if we were not on a tour. We got to know each other well and it was nice group too. we slept under the stars too, the sky was amazing as there was not light pollution for miles around. We saw shooting stars and the milky way was very clear too.
we spent one day in Darwin, but there isn't much here. Cullen Bay is nice though- lots of expensive boats! however, the rest of Darwin is just another town really. we went out for a nice meal at a Thai place with a couple we met on the tour.
we then got the Ghan down to Alice Springs. It is a long train journey but we got to stop at Katherine for 4 hours. We walked around the gorge, this is beautiful as well, but not as nice as Kakadu.
