¡Barca!
Let me begin by saying that Barcelona is my favorite city. It is so beautiful with restaurants, people, and little narrow alley ways that are filled with small balconies where people dry their clothes. Gaudi is for sure my favorite architect.
The first day in the city we decided to walk around town and see the main attractions. We ended up walking miles and miles and tired ourselves out. The second day we bought tickets for the double decker tourist bus and we covered much more ground. We visited 3 Gaudi buildings and Guell park. We walked through the Casa Batllo which was really funky and the park which has a great view of the city. It is trippy to hear so many languages, everyone is speaking German, French, Russian, Italian, Catalan, and English. Catalan is difficult to understand and I understand Italian more. Oh, and I love those little baguettes with prociutto for only €2! What a steal!
Can you tell that was Brian?! Haha. So Barcelona is an absolutely amazing city. Madrid has a lot to live up to, and I'm kind of worried. :-/ but I am sure it will be great. As Brian mentioned, the first day we walked and walked. But we got lost in the maze of alley ways Barcelona has to offer, and it is so worth it. In some of the pictures we posted you will see some of the things I will be talking about. First off, we took the tram and metro to Las Ramblas, which is the main street attraction in Barcelona. By far one of the best pedestrian friendly street I have walked in. It's is just filled with life, food, people, music, anything and everything. From this main street you run into different alley ways and beautiful architecture. :) We walked all the way from the center of Las Ramblas to the port, which was ok, but the city center is much better. The port is more like a shopping area which I can't afford. We walked back towards the Barri Gotica (gothic area) which of course is just as amazing. Unfortunately buildings in Europe always seem to be in restoration and covered by scaffolding. But even then it is quite breathe taking. On the first day walk we ran into the main market in Barcelona, but everything in it just looks so fresh and good. We got a chance to buy some juices, fruits, bread, sandwiches. These were kind of cheap. In the afternoon we ate here at a little counter top, and it was pricier. We had anti pasta salad which was pretty much like seafood salad in olive oil and vinegar. Yummy but not worth the price. We also got paella, because you have to get it at least once, and I have definitely had better in SF. So, although we have had a few yummy things, the environment and architecture make up for the lack of great food. (or we are just to broke to afford amazing food, haha)
Obviously we are jet lagged, so I am writing this at like 4am here, and we have been sleeping odd hours. With that said, yesterday (Friday) we took what we love to call "turi-bus" thanks to Mexico city. The double decker tour buses, which are so worth it because you just ride and get off wherever there is an attraction you want to see, and you can stay on if you are exhausted, like us! We did get off at 4 Gaudi sites, which are also in my collection of pictures, and went inside 2 of them. Brian finally knows what art nouveau is! The buildings are like art pieces, i cannot explain how ornate and amazing they are. I will just have to post more pictures. Later at night we had beers, sangria, and more sandwiches at a little alley way cafe. We people watched, and rested before the night was over. Sitting at these cafes and drinking and eating little munchies make you feel like your spanish!! ha! Today ( if I don't fall back asleep) we are planning to take a drive up or down the mediterranean coast of Spain. Tomorrow we will be driving off into Madrid, where we will start looking for an apartment. Ok, we will write more in a few days.
