My transformation in being Chinese has begun! I now have a very plush pad in the centre of Shanghai, which I move into tomorrow, and have a few jobs "in the mix", (in other words I have not actually got one yet but it is looking likely).
Over the past 2 weeks I have flitted between Gary's University and Shanghai. I have sampled the night life in that crazy city and it really is a 24 hour party. There is simply an endless list of things you can do. For example, on Saturday I was up at 5 tom watch the sun rise in a park a couple of km from the hostel I was staying in. There, I joined about 400 chinese people in their daily Tai Chi session. In a city which is so hectic, that morning was surprisingly peaceful and serene. After a little mid day nap I explored more of the city with a very interesting girl I met. She showed me the "old town" of Shanghai. I felt like I was back in Dali or Lijiang. That evening I went out with a big group from the hostel to crazy club, not too far from where my new flat is. We returned, a little bleary eyed, at 5 am, what a day!
Yesterday, was our first trip to the supermarket, another "cultural" experience!! They had dried chickens and ducks hanging up and every part of every other animal in a fridge (i.e. chicken feet and beaks, cows hearts and intestines amongst other things). They have live fish and eels swimming around in tanks waiting to be eaten and to top it all we found turtles and toads still alive in a bucket. I think I will stop there, plus there is a taxi waiting outside.
STA have imprved the blogs to such an extent that I can now use smileies in my journals! ingenious don't you think...
loads of love, naomi xxx
