Our second day in Rome we ventured out on a day trip to Naples and the ruins of Pompeii.
Our day started at 7am as we met up with the tour company in charge of our day trip. The journey was 3 hours south of Rome, and although we were still jetlagged, we were ready to go!
We were greeted by an animated tour guide named "Alessssssandra". Alessandra had the talent of being multi-lingual, and shared her talent with us for the entire trip, and she described landmarks along the way in English, Italian, Spanish...and some other languages we weren't quite sure of.
Along the way we made a stop at what seemed like those "visitors centers" along the highway that we have here in US. Seemed like every tour company stopped there passengers there, because it was filled with tourists. We were able to get a ham and cheese panini...which they referred to as panino.
We finally made it to Naples...and met up with our new tour guide (forgot her name). She led us on a walking tour of Naples where we saw a fort, a piazza, a palace...and a mass distribution of loaves of bread to the locals. We think it was given out by a religious group. Sure would be nice to get free loaves of bread on Sundays at home...
Our visit to Naples was relatively short as we got back on the bus and headed uphill to lunch in Pompeii.
Walking through the ruins of Pompeii was amazing. It was like we were walking through a city frozen in time. We walked through the city and saw ancient basilicas, the town hall, Roman homes and baths...and even more interesting "houses". See the pics.
It was a great experience to be in the midst of so much history and to see how there were so many similarities to present day life.
After our long and tiring exploration of Pompeii, we hopped on the bus back to Rome. We didn't arrive until almost 9pm...and we were hungry!! Our American tourmates from Florida, Dani & Nicole had the same thing on their mind. Alessandra (the tour guide) suggested that "the beautiful American girls" get off at the same bus stop for dinner. So we did.
We found a cute little restaurant to have our feast. After having some vino, caprese salad, delightful pasta dishes, and my favorite -Tiramisu, we were full and happy!! We were ready to take the night on!
Ebonee found a club online and we decided to try it out..Cafe Caruso de Oriente. Because we went straight from our bus trip and dinner, I didn't have on my cute "going out outfit"...but that's the beauty of spontaneity. We had so much fun! After dancing the night away, we ventured back to our hotel...worn out and weary. Oh well...'When in Rome!"
