so...another crazy couple of days have passed!!! I have now been in Kenya for over a month and I am happy to say that I think the political stability of Kenya may be on the rise. As of yesterday the talks between the two parties have been rather successful and a power sharing agreement has been signed. I'm a little cynnical about this working long term, but for the time being it will keep the peace. Kofi Annan has done some wonderful things and we are all really happy to see him stay!!!
Let me just digress a little bit and talk about how disappointed I am with the United States at the moment. After spending a good deal of time here with a Kenyan family, being taught by Kenyans, and having Kenyan friends I am discusted with the way Americans treat the locals here. We went to the embassy yesterday the the group was obviously split between all of us who are in the country to do service, and then those who are there to exploit the people and resources of the country. I cannot even describe how pompous some of the comments were. It seemed that the government only cares about Kenya when they have something to gain or lose, and I think a good deal of Kenyans sense this as well. Needless to say, I spend a great deal of time explaining that there are alot of individuals who care about Kenya, even if the government isn't able to show that.
In other news, my mom is succeeding in her goal to get me nice and plumpy...I guess drinking tea with whole milk and sugar 3 times a day could do that to a person. I mean...cooking cabbage in lard could do it too. I have super sweet tanlines too. haha. On the upside, my hair is going to look amazing after this weekend because my sisters have decided that I need a weave. Get ready world...maggie'g got hair extensions.
Since things are getting more peaceful, I think I am going to try and work in one of the slums this weekend. We have a friend who is trying to build a school basically on top of a trash pile filled with hogs. Our task is to clean out an area so that we can build a little shack school house. I'll let you know how it goes.
I'm also trying to work something out with aid organizations (redcross, unicef, etc) so that I can work in one of the IDP camps after the program is over in May....if anyone reading this knows sombody who can hook me up...please let me know!
anywho...that is all for now! xoxo
