Neil's Round the World Trip!
I got up at 10 and had my Argentine breakfast of cakes (like Danish pastries) and coffee. I picked up my washing from the lavanderia and noticed my white socks have all become pink socks! I returned to the hostel and made myself some mate, I then relaxed on the rooftop reading and sipping my mate. I decided to call Monty..bad idea as I ended up chatting for 1 hour! My dad's going to kill me as the D/D is on his account!
I walked around the cobbled streets of the San Telmo district "the home of tango". After a while of looking at antiques I walked into the city centre and found the Casa Rosa where Evita made her famous speeches and waved to her adoring masses. I sat in Plaza de Mayo and people-watched for awhile. Everyone is very Italian in their appearance and style (due to the large-scale Italian immigration). I walked along the main shopping street called Avenida Florida. I bought an album by Gotan Project which is modern electronica/tango.
I walked along the busy main streets of the city and found the Obelisk; one of the famous landmarks of the city. Today the weather isn't very nice, cloudy and overcast. Also it's quite cold and I wish I had a scarf to wrap around me like the stylish Porteños.
I sat in a parilla restaurant and ordered steak (what else?) and a beer. I looked up at the great buildings on Avenida de Mayo. The steak was good but a bit too much fat on it. I got the subway (which was rammed full of people...bit of a tight squeeze!) to San Juan and walked back to my hostel.
I think a combination of lots of walking, my sore throat which has progressed to a full-on cold and a beer contributed to my 2 hour siesta. I woke up and listened to music in the lounge. I returned to my bed at 11 as there was nobody about in the hostel. I went to sleep early with the Korean guy already snoring loudly. I changed beds after the Korean requested, I think he thought the bed would give way and I would crush him!
I'm going to move to Che Lagarto hostel on Friday as this hostel is a little bit too quiet.
