A Semester Overseas
Tonight I went to see the opera "I Vespri Siciliani" by Verdi and it was very good. I'm so happy to be back in Wien so I can take advantage of going to the opera as much as I can. Where else can I go to the opera for only 3.50?
After visiting Prague, we drove to Krakow, Poland on Monday, Sept. 18th. We got there around 5:30pm and we had the rest of the night free so my friends and I decided to check out the downtown area. We walked around the old market square which is the biggest medieval square in Europe and found fire dancers! (see my photos)
On Tuesday, Sept. 19th: In the morning we had a very long walking tour of the city. We walked all throughout the old market square, around Wawel Castle, to Kasimierz, and back to the market square for lunch where we ate perogies! After lunch we took a trip to the Wieliczka salt mines. We walked 135 meters below ground level to see the mines. There were a lot of really cool sculptures throughout the mines of famous people who have visited the mines. The mines are also used for concerts and performances and we saw the concert halls made completely from rock salt. The acoustics are very good with walls made of salt. We could lick the walls since salt kills all the bacteria! They also had a center for treating asthma patients since inhaling the salt helps allergies. After our tour through the salt mines we ate dinner at a restaurant in Kasimierz. During dinner they had a really good kleszmer band play for us. It was a lot of fun!
Wednesday, Sept. 20th: In the morning we went on a tour through Wawel Castle. After lunch, we drove to Auschwitz and Auschwitz II- Birkenau which was very hard to see. At night, we went to a cool jazz club that was recommended to us and the music was very good.
At this point in our trip we had heard about the riots going on in Budapest because their prime minister had been lying to them about the economic state of the country. So we were a little concerned about leaving for Budapest the next day but we had heard that the riots had calmed down and our guide there called us to confirm that it was still fine for us to come.
I put up all my Krakow pictures up so you can look at all of them!
