What a terrible night's sleep! The drip continued and I kept getting splashed in the face, Katharine virtually lay on top of me like an extra hot hot water bottle and I kept dreaming of us waking up in a muddy lake and bogged! We all woke up about 5am and it was still raining outside so the boys began playing Loot and the rest of us dozed. By 6am, the rain was very light so we began to pack up - both flip out beds were wet where the edges had laid against the canvas. It was too early to start the generator for coffee as there were no signs of life from the other vans near us, so we hit the road for an hour or two and hoped to drive through the rain. No such luck. I got an Internet signal near Caiguna and the weather radar showed a massive front coming through which is heading in the same direction as us with a chance of thunderstorms! 40kms along the road from our overnight stop we passed a stop we had considered but decided it was too far - would you believe it had a massive covered shelter with only 1 caravan under it. To think we could still be dry!! After a couple of hours the rain had died down so we pulled over and had breakfast and coffee, then it was back on the road. We listened to a talking book to pass the time and saw 4 massive eagles, very ugly looking, eating road kill. At Madura we needed petrol but it was all closed up due to a power cut so half an hour later we had to pull over again and refuel with the jerry cans (at least the rain had stopped). Made it to Mundrabilla by 12 noon and filled the car up with 150 litres of unleaded at 196c a litre! We have churned through the fuel today but it's really windy and we're driving straight into it. Stopped at Border Village at 1245 and put another 30 litres in the car at 205c. We saw the ocean and it was such a refreshing view after hours and hours of flat scrub. We drove on another 10 kms and pulled up at one of the cliff top rest areas for lunch. It was great to have a walk around and get some fresh air although the kids dived back into the car as soon as possible. Set off again and listened to more of the talking book. The rain began again and now looks set in. At 640pm (SA time) we reached the Nullabor roadhouse, having seen another eagle and a dingo. Filled up with 51 litres at 205.5c. We had planned on stopping but it seemed pointless in such heavy rain. We drove on until we were about 10 kms past Nundroo (fuel168.9!) then pulled in at a very dodgy looking rest area that was a little off the main road at 830pm. We had Spaghetti Bolognaise for dinner and then straight to bed with everything feeling very damp and dirty. Nick has rigged up a paper towel contraption to catch my drip so hopefully it will work.
