Woken throughout the night due to drunken idiots just outside the park. By the time we got up we had both decided it was time to move on and we look forward to going back across the Queensland Outback. Areas of Kakadu are really commercial and as it's peak time there are people everywhere - no sense of remoteness here! We had a quick breakfast and packed up the car then headed to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) about 45 minutes drive from the caravan park. When we reached the car park there were only three other vehicles there and walking the 1 km track to the waterfall it was just us - beautiful! The track followed a stunning river with crystal clear water and no sign of any crocs, although there were warnings everywhere. The end of the track opened up into a huge plunge pool with the waterfall cascading into it. There were heaps of different fish swimming around and we all stripped off and jumped in too. The water was magic. We had a snack on the rocks after our swim and one of the chips fell in the water. Fish came out of nowhere trying to devour it and from then on it was hard to stop the kids feeding them!! We stayed there for about an hour and then returned to the car as other groups had arrived to enjoy the spot. Maguk was well worth staying an extra couple of days to see. Once back in the car we drove on to Gunlom. It was quite a long drive and we had considered taking the van and camping there as it is on the way out of Kakadu but the day was still early and we didn't feel like returning to the caravan park. In the end we were glad we did the trip without the van as it was 70 kms on a red dirt road and traffic going both ways was constant. We made the drive in a cloud of red dust and the car was absolutely covered by the time we had finished. We walked to the base of the waterfall where there was another huge plunge pool, which was very pretty. The kids had a swim but it was too busy for Nick and me. We decided against walking to the plunge pools above the waterfall, as the kids weren't keen and eventually made the long drive home. After a much-needed coffee and a late lunch we went for a swim at the pool. Nick got savaged by green tree ants in his bathers and even a deep dip didn't stop them from biting. The mosquitoes and March flies were also biting so I ran home and began to get ready for a few days of free camping. The kids wanted a pizza for dinner from the Bistro but settled for pancakes and a movie, then fell asleep really quickly - they were all exhausted and we weren't too far behind them!
