As much as I love Kakadu it is a terrible place to have a good night's sleep!! At midnight last night the bats woke us all up when they began screaming in the tree that overhangs the caravan. Then at 4 am the power kept tripping and the microwave would ding every time it went on and off. In the end we have to turn the fridge to gas and use a 12-volt plug on the Engle. We eventually got back to sleep but not for long as the kids were awake at the crack of dawn. We had breakfast and packed up the car and were on the road by 830 am. We drove to Jim Jim Falls which took us about two hours as the road was unsealed. It was an easy road until the last ten kms and then it became very windy with either deep sand or large rocks as the surface. I thought there would be plenty of other people around but we had the road to ourselves and there were only four other cars in the car park. The walk to the falls took us about an hour as we took it very slowly. The track ran along the edge of the water which was beautiful and no sign of any crocs but we still didn't get too close to the edge just in case - the sight of the croc trap sitting in the water was enough of a deterrent! As the track got closer to the plunge pool it became a mass of rock boulders we had to climb over which the kids loved, especially the boys! We sat for half an hour and watched the water. Several people were swimming and although the water looked lovely it was too cold for us. The kids seemed to climb quicker on the way back to the car, probably because of the promise of food, and it was quite nice to relax in the car on the way home. By the time we reached the van Nick and I were desperate for a coffee so we had a quick brew and then hit the school books for a couple of hours with the kids. We spent the late afternoon around the pool and then Nick made everyone dinner. The kids played outside until it got dark and then came in happily ready for bed - I think we finally exhausted them!!
