Rotorua
To get to Rotorua we had an hour's drive north from Taupo. As we approached the township we could see different steaming areas all over the place. We headed to the i-site in the centre of town, as we got out we could definitely smell the eggy smell! Before going to find a holiday park to stay, we went to the redwoods forest where there are lots of walking tracks. We chose a 2hr trek which involved a nice lookout over the town.
After our walk we found top10 holiday park on the edge of town, easy walking distance into it though.... 3 nights for the price of 2!! The rest of the day was spent chilling out and doing abit of a shop.
The following day the alarm sounded around 4.00am... England were kicking off their euro2012 campaign. Luckily the game was being shown on PRIME and we had picked the signal up for that in our campervan. Good result against the frogs. After the game we went back to sleep and had abit of a lie in.
Peter has some relatives in New Zealand so we decided to go and find Peter's mums cousin Julie. Unfortunately Linda gave us the wrong address the silly sausage... we realised this when we got a text of a person saying Julie and Keith don't live at this address! This was due to knowone being home and us leaving a note to contact us.
The same afternoon we walked to the nearby Kuarui park which is full of mud pools and steaming water... all fenced off though so you don't walk into any. In the park there were a couple of mineral pools, so we dipped our feet in for a while and relaxed. Its pretty bizzare watching people carry on normally when steam is rising from the ground right next to their homes, in some cases in their gardens and we witnessed steam coming from the drains at the side of the road!
We had a quick drive down by the lakefront before returning the the holiday park for some steak for tea :).
The next day the weather was once again beautiful, so we went for a run in the morning. After lunch we drove north of the town to ZORB.. zorbing is basically when you get inside a massive inflatable ball and roll down the hill. There were many different options to choose from, we went for 'double trouble'... this involved us both being taken to the top of the hill in our swim wear. The ball was filled we a few litres of warm water. We both dived in and listened to instructions, being told to sit facing uphill. Peter had a little waterprove camera in had to try and capture what was about to unfold.... lots of screaming, shouting and laughing as we rolled down the hill not having a clue where we were inside the ball, getting wet through in the process. As we finally came to a stop at the bottom Lucy could not stop laughing which was hilarious. Brilliant fun and would of loved to go again but it was abit pricey as we have well and truely gone over budget in the wonderful New Zealand.
On the way back into town we stopped for a round of mini-golf at a very nice and impressive mini-golf course, rabbits were bouncing around the place too.
