Leaving our holiday park in Rotorua, we headed north. Stopping near the top of lake Rotorua at Julie & Keiths correct address!! Unfortunately knowbody was home. It looked a nice place though. Heading further north up route 36 we got to the city of Tauranga, this is where Peter's Grandpa's sister lives. Not knowing we where visited, Eveline seemed delighted to see and meet us. We stayed for a few hours which was really nice, having soup for lunch and Peter eating the lovely shortbread biscuits Eveline had kindly got out for us. It was lovely to meet Eveline and we learnt quite alot about that part of Peter's family. We then headed to 15km to the seafront and Mt Muanganui. Here we climbed to the summit which had lovely views out to sea, town and the port of Tuaranga. There was a old lady at the top celebrating her birthday with her daughter, they got a lift to the top.
Later in the afternoon we set off driving towards the Coromandel Peninsula, ending us eventually staying at a D.O.C campsite near wentworth falls... a little creepy as we were the only ones there. The following morning we enjoyed some good sausage rolls and pies from a bakery in Whangamata... all the bakeries in New Zealand seem to be run by chinese!!
Heading further north towards Cathedral cove and hot water beach, we had planned a couple of walks but unfortunately the rain had set in. On a brighter note though, when we got to Cathedral cove the sun started to shine. We had a nice 40 minute walk down to the cove which is set inbetween 2 beaches, walking through the cove to the next beach. After here we headed to hot water beach, where at low tide you are able to dig sandpits on the beach and hot thermal water will seep through the surface of the sand forming a hot water pool. We discovered on arrival that we had missed low tide for the day and would have to wait until the following morning. We stayed at a top10 holiday park that evening and enjoyed some wines and beers. Also getting up early the next day to enjoy England beat the Swedes!
The plan after check out had been to go to the beach.... we didn't fancy it in the cold, then getting covered in sand and having to have a cold shower afterwards!! Instead we drove to Whangapoua, where we enjoyed a walk to New Chums Beach where we enjoyed a nice picnic on a gorgeous isolated beach. To get to the beach we had to walk over the rocks next to the sea to get to the path which lead over to the lovely beach. In the afternoon we drove to Coromandel Town where we relaxed and enjoyed a couple of films whilst having beers accompanied by fish and chips... still havn't found a chippy that compares to the ones in England. The next day was gorgeous, clear blue skies. We drove down the bendy road on the west side of peninsula through the town of Thames before finally arriving at a holiday park near Miranda which had a nice thermal pool to relax in.
