We arrived in the lovely city of San Diego early afternoon after the 2hr 30min drive from Los Angeles. San Diego is California's second largest city and we can safely assure you that its much nicer than the biggest. Checked into RK Hostel located on the edge of the Little Italy area, which was in walking distance of both the harbour and the city centre.
After getting our things sorted out, we went for a wander through the lovely Little Italy which was lined with different restaurants which all looked fantastic. When we finally got down to the harbour we went on the USS MIDWAY which was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class, and the first to be commissioned after the end of World War II. Active in the Vietnam War and in Operation Desert Storm, she is currently a museum ship at the USS Midway Museum.
We arrived around 3.30pm and it closed at 5pm, but we got told we could get our tickets stamped to return the following day if we didn't see everything in that time... we thought it wouldn't take too long. We were completely wrong! On board the ship we got a self-guided audio tour, so we could get told about each part of the ship as we walked around. At first we looked around the hangar and flight deck, war veterans giving talks about certain things on the ship. The flight deck was superb, with a wide range of aircrafts spread across it. Apparently 25 different restored aircrafts. Some we were able to climb inside. Next news it was nearly 5pm and we hadn't seen half the ship... returning the following morning it was then.
As we walked back towards our hostel along the harbour front we came across what was possibly a celebrities wedding, lots of photographers and a police van around as the bride got out of horse drawn cart before boarding a ship. We didn't recognise her though, so we may be completely wrong.
That evening we enjoyed a delicious lasagne from an italian takeaway... not as good as Lucy's smoked bacon lasagne though!
The following day after a really good sleep we went back to the USS MIDWAY, where we spent a further 2 hours looking around the ship. Firstly we went upto the bridge which is where the captain and the 'boss' are situated. A very important part of the running of the ship is on the bridge. We finished our trip by looking on the 2nd,3rd and 4th deck which was really interesting. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learned alot about the running of such a large ship.
We then headed to the gsalamp quarter which is part of the city centre, here we thought we would try a TGI FRIDAYs. Its not quite like the english version we all see back home. They don't dress in them stupid uniforms for starters.
The rest of our afternoon was spent walking around the nice Balboa park which is located just north of the city centre. Great weather and a lovely day was finished with getting a couple of large pizza slices from the very good italian takeaway.
The following day was spent driving along the coast before having a look around the market in Little Italy before enjoying a beer and frozen yoghurt in the sunshine.
The next day we had to say our goodbyes to the lovely San Diego... We had a long driving day in the boiling temperatures, reaching highs of 117f, which is approx 47degrees celsius. Seeing lots of cactus's on route! Arriving later in the day in Phoenix, Arizona where Peter enjoyed a quick swim in the pool at the comfort inn.
