Leaving the scorching hot Phoenix after a nice continental breakfast we headed 2 hours north to the town of Flagstaff. This was where we were staying before our Grand Canyon adventure the following day. Just outside flagstaff we visited the Walnut Canyon National Park which was a little taster into what the Grand Canyon might be like.
The rest of the day we didn't do much to be honest apart from chill out at the Luxury Inn... really luxury!!
The next day came and we were up early as we had a 90minute drive to the east entrance of the national park. We had decided to enter this way as we would see more and we would be exiting through the south so it wouldn't make sense to go in and out of the same entrance. Even before we reached the parks entrance we stopped at a couple of lookouts over the canyon as the road followed the canyon into the national park. It cost us $25 to enter the park in our vehicle.
Our first stop inside the park was a visit to Desert View.... we were like 'WOW'... from here we could see for miles over and down into the Grand Canyon, we can safely say the views were spectacular. As we had entered the park from the east gate, the road follows the canyon along until you reach Grand Canyon Village, before arriving there though we stopped a few times at various lookouts which all had brilliant and different views.
Once in the village we parked up and left the car behind, this was because certain roads are only accessible by the free shuttle buses provided. We got our first bus towards Hermits Rd where we got on and off the buses doing walks along the south rim inbetween some of the stops. It was a pretty hot day so we made sure we had plenty of water whilst walking along the rim.
After a couple of hours exploring the Hermits Rd area we caught the shuttle bus back to the village before catching a different bus to the trailhead for south kaibab. This is where we walked down abit into the canyon (still miles and knowhere near the river at the very bottom), this gave us a different view of the Canyon, looking up aswel as down. The trail goes all the way to the bottom but we stopped at ooh aah point, where we were greeted by terrific views across the canyon. Then it was a hard slog back up the steep track in the scorching sunshine... im glad we didn't go any further down into the canyon because would of been a horrible trip back out.
It was now late afternoon, so we grabbed some cold drinks before setting off for Vegas! Just outside the park we stopped for pictures outside Flinstones, getting pictures with Fred... before having a nice short 4h 30m drive into Nevada and hellooooo Vegas :-D
