Tongariro Crossing
Well.... That was hard works but what a sense of achievement at the end of it. An 8 hour walk completed in 6 and a half hours. Not at all easy but well worth the effort for the stunning views.
The walk incorporates a lot of the Scenery that was used to film LOTR... Most notably the mountain used as Mount Doom and also the volcanic rock land that made up the plains of Mordor. Stunning Scenery, absolutely breathtaking and they say that this is nothing compared to the South Island.... Well it will take some beating, I tell you that.
It was hard work at times. The climbs were difficult and heaven knows how many stairs we climbed today. Too many. The weather made things difficult too. At times, the gale force winds almost swept Sarah off her feet but she was an absolute trooper and battled on through everything. I think the hardest point of the day was when we were climbing a very hard summit which Neil fell on only to get to the top and realise the people we had been following had gone the wrong way and we had climbed a summit that was deemed to difficult to be include in the walk route for safely. Getting down was fortunately easier than getting up that part. Once again, won't say too much because photos and stories to follow at a later date. Anyway, glad to be back at somewhere near sea level ready for a good nights sleep. We are on the West Coast about 2 hours North of Wellington ready to go there tomorrow to cross to the South Island ahead of schedule. Can't Wait :) xx
