A Kick in the Franz Josef's!!!
Our mountain climb was not to be. The helicopters are still grounded and we were in the first instance very upset having changed our trip itinerary to come back this way but we have changed our outlook somewhat in the last few hours...... WE HAVE A REASON TO COME BACK AGAIN!!!
We can't hang around waiting for the opportunity so we headed North to Shantytown (a mock replica of a gold mining village from around 1880) which also had a working steam train that was used back then as well as a lot of the original tools and artefacts that have been preserved. We had a bash at gold panning and Sarah managed to salvage some gold from the New Zealand hillside.
Since then we have driven across Arthur's Pass, a scenic route across the Southern Alps to Christchurch and have just arrived at our campsite on the outskirts of the city. As we arrived we began to see some of the damage caused by the Earthquakes (yes, plural) within the last year. We are planning a tour of the city tomorrow so will leave that until then. Tired now so time for bed. Goodnight xxxx
