Europe Hit By MGH
Another sleep cut short by our arrival at our first change at 4 in the morning. But troopers as we are headed off to meet our fate with tents under our arms, and worn smiles on our faces. Somehow all went to plan and we arrived at the festival, which was in fact on an airfield. Worryingly it was in use, more worryingly it was unfathomable that such a venue should be graced by a trained professional, rather trainees.
After leaving Krakow at about 10.30pm we started erecting our tents at about 10.30am in the sweltering heat. We headed straight for some shade, not the easiest thing to fing in a vast open field, and Joe and James got in a couple of drinks. A naive decision in hindsight - especially when combined with playing 3 hours of football in the Sub Saharan heat as a means of filling the time before Afu-Ra - it may be noted though, that something good did come out of playing football for so long - James kicked the ball into a bin from 40 yards. It is worth a mention, too, that this was not the only thing done during the time waiting for the first act - we all tried sleeping in a beanbag filled tent, however this was unsuccessful due to the sweltering heat and the excess loss of bodily fluids through sweating onto the well insulated bean bags.
After a couple of drinks we met up with some guys and gals we know from London and all headed off out together. The line up was obvious, despite there being a choice of 10 stages. We started with Afu-Ra in a huge tent, which was alright at best, but just, well, a bit American. So who more British to set it all alight than Rascit, God's Gift, mans know, wo else but Dizzee Rascal. What a rascal. To the front we went and started reppin' it for the big LDN. f***ing sick.
"Whats going on Bratislavia?" Dizzee's set got the night started and the crowd 'Live O' so we all started to Skank Out and Jump About - credit too to DJ Semtex who not only pulled out grime beats and old school rock classics, but did it all with only one arm.
The next act on our planned itinerary was not for another half an hour so we chilled down with Tetty, Nathan, Hannah, Anya and Rosie and had anothe pint or two to get ourselves juiced up for the Scratch Perverts. During this wait, the jaw-grabbing-beef-starting-wife-beating-incredible-hulk at the table next to us started on Joe - it took three of us to contain him but we didn't sweat and sent him cryin home to his mumma (she was waitin for him).
We put this little debacle behind us and set off for the Scratch Perverts set, and what a set it was... They threw in an eclectic mix of tunes starting with mainly hip hop and poppy classics, then moving to dance and finally on to drums. All the boys were bringing out their finest moves, apart from nick who decided to spend his night harassing Dizzee's crew in the hope of a few freebies. Unfortunately these were not obtained, but photos with, and a handshake from Dizze would do a better job than any souvenir. Andy C wrapped up the night and we all headed back to our tents for a scrimpy night's sleep.
The next morning, Mark, Ben, James and Nick opted for a bed that night and headed on their way to Vienna, but Joe, the little trooper that he is, tensed it for the second night and fought through another sweltering day in an airfield in the middle of nowhere...
