Saturday morning was the beginning of a long day's travels down to Koh Mook island, one of the Trang islands on the west coast. We started with a longtail boat from Railey to Ao Nang and then had to take a public songthaew taxi to Krabi bus terminal. Here we sat and watched passers by until our bus down to Trang, which was air-conditioned and much cheaper than if we'd booked through a resort. Once in Trang we took a tuk tuk to a travel agent, who then arranged a private taxi and boat plus a night's accomodation for us on Koh Mook island. Once we finally arrived at the island the tide was out and so we were greeted by a tractor and trailer for us and our luggage!
Our first night was spent on the quieter east side of the island (only our resort, at which we and a group of Japanese were staying!). We explored the local fishing village, which was very interesting, got many strange looks, enjoyed the most greasy pancakes ever from a little stall and saw a motorbike and side-car ice cream van driving down the road playing music! A fairly entertaining evening... (with a few Chang beers to pass the time!)
However, very early the next morning we began the hour's walk across to the west of the island... Until we were stopped by a lady offering a motorbike taxi, which we promptly agreed to! Balancing our rucksacks between their legs, two locals took us across the island to 'Had Farang Bungalows,' which was run by a friend of their's but turned out to be a very friendly resort, with amazing homecooked food and comfortable little bungalows.
Later that morning we were given a boat trip by another friend of the owner to the Emerald Cave... This is a pretty impressive inland beach surrounded by huge cliffs, which is reached by swimming through a 10 metre dark tunnel. It may have been a bit more atmospheric with out the hundreds of Thai tourists there at the same time, but was still definately worth a visit.
Since then we have crossed the border from Thailand to Malaysia and after a brief stop on Langkawi we are currently staying in Georgetown on Penang, which we shall go and explore tomorrow!
