Well, we flew into Cairns over three weeks ago now and immediately began experiencing the beach bum culture of eastern Australia.... ie. we did very little for a week! Stayed at Calypso hostel, which was great and where we met a wicked group of people to hang around with... And so we sat by the lagoon, did a little shopping and drunk a little beer during our time in Cairns. Definately good to relax after our whistle-stop tour of Asia!
We did however manage one day trip - 'Uncle Brian's' tour of the raniforest and Atherton Tablelands, which we would recommend! We saw tropical rainforest, many waterfalls, a natural rock slide (much fun!) and tried (but failed) to spot some wild platypus. We also attempted to recreate the hair swooshing Timotei advert, which was filmed at one of the waterfalls we visited... which explains the strange photos of us flicking our hair! (Coincidentally also the waterfall where Peter Andre filmed 'Mysterious Girl'... exciting stuff!)
And then up to Cape Tribulation for the weekend, where we saw crocodiles on the Daintree river, had a walk through one of the oldest rainforests and had a scuba diving trip on the 'Rum Runner' - the only boat allowed to visit the reef up there. The diving was amazing, with so many types of coral, fantastic fish, barracudas and a sighting of a big shark - somewhat hazy! Was a lovely day out on the Barrier Reef... an amazing experience. The next morning we went for a walk through the forest to a freshwater swimming hole and then on to the beach alongside a creek... where we saw a crocodile! Luckily it was on the other side of the bank and there was just enough time for a quick photo before running down to the beach!
