Up very early for a morning river safari, so that meant a 6am wake up and then off onto the river again to see what animals and birds we could spot.
Did not see as many animals today but a few birds and unfortunately not the pigmy elephant. We saw
Shepherd Eagle
Short Tail Makat
Silver Langur
Anjautan bird
Oriental pied hornbill
Long Tailed Makat
Banana Snake
Little Egritv
Rhino Hornbill
After this we jumped in the coach for a 2 hour trip to our next destination Sandakan. On the way we stopped off at some caves and we could not decide if we should go or sleep on the coach. Thankfully we decided to go as on the walk to the cave we saw a family of Orangutans in the trees just above us. This was amazing as we did not think we would see any in the wild. We even saw a little baby, wow. The cave was big and approx 150 meters in height and the draw to visit was that this is the location for the swallows and their valuable nests. They make the nests with their spittle and once they are finished with them the local men climb up and harvest them and sell them at a great price to the Chinese who think they have special anti aging properties - they eat them!! We were very fortunate as they only do this harvesting twice a year and they just happened to be doing it when we were they. Those guys are mad dangling from ropes 150m up in the air. Also sharing the cave were a load of bats and millions of c*** roaches (which really freaked out Lily). Just to top off an amazing experience literally just outside the cave entrance we saw some more Orangutans. This means we saw three lots in the wild which is almost unheard of. We have not even got to the Orangutan sanctuary yet. Once we reached Sandakan we had lunch walked around a bit but it was another fairly small place and then caught up on a bit of Wifi which we have not had much of on this trip, which has been nice. A lovely meal with the whole group in the evening, really starting to get to know everyone properly now.
