I was so jetlagged and emotional yesterday I couldn't even open emails from my family without crying, and so had to evacuate the common room so I could cry in my room while reading them. The first time being away, completely alone on the other side of the world from anyone you know, is horrible. But my parents would tell me to suck it up and stop being a wimp. My immediate impression of Beijing is not great- there's so much smog it's disgusting. But on the upside, there was a very entertaining thunderstorm last night and it's left everything shining. The area I'm in is a lot better now it's clean, and I decided to venture out for a wander. The hostel itself is very basic but great, apart from the communal toilet and shower. The shower is okay- hot water in the mornings which is appreciated, but the window (with no blind) is facing straight onto someone else's window. And the toilet situation is getting more and more dire- one of the towels has been stolen!! :o
I slept terribly last night. I had about 3 hours sleep, then was awake for the rest of the night, so I read. About 4am a damn cockerel started doodle-oooing every 20 seconds, and didn't stop until around 9am. So Millie is once again sleep deprived, but I slept for 2 hours during the day so it's not as bad as yesterday.
Because I was both jetlagged and scared to explore, and the hostel has no food, I only ate jelly beans yesterday. But on the upside- I had free breakfast this morning (TOAST!!) which was bloody incredible! And everyone was really friendly and chatty. So everything's on the up…
I've got to take extra precaution about eating out now due to the toilet circumstance, which sucks.
Even though the hostel is very basic, it does have a crazy colour scheme, bonkers stickers everywhere and very amusing 'no smoking' signs with various animals smoking. I have an antelope smoking in my room and there's an armadillo in the common room. That's the next thing, the common room is great. Big comfy sofas, lots of people's travelling conversations for me to listen in on and free Wi-Fi! After my walk around earlier, I met a German girl who had just arrived at the hostel. She overheard me asking about food and asked to join me. We found a tiny noodle bar and had a massive bowel each for around £1! Happy Millie... It was so nice to have company to talk to, and now I'm really looking forward to Josh arriving on Friday.
I really want to get out and about tomorrow as it's my last day in Beijing, but I want to do it as cheaply as possible, so I may visit the Zoo via the subway. I want to do the Botanical gardens, but they seem a long way away... :/ I'll decided tomorrow morning.
Night. :)
