An exhausting day of endless travelling. The TukTuk took us to the train at Matara and so started another 4 hours of sweaty locomotion. We changed trains at Colombo fort, giving Bob time to practice her public loo induced apnea and for me to forage for some local lunch. The slow train on to Negombo lived up to its name and whilst most of the time was spent watching the tracks passing underneath us, through the gaping hole in the floor, we had to keep our eyes peeled for any clues as to where we were and when we should get off!
Eventually we rattled over the airfield, so we knew we were close, and after getting off at the next station we eventually managed to explain the directions to Gerry's house to our TukTuk driver and we were greeted like long lost friends.
After a catch up over a pot of tea we had time to re-pack our bags and enjoy an very welcome dip in the pool before our ride to the airport arrived. Our bags were scanned 3 times before we reached departures and strangely our gate surprised us, flashing red with its 'last call' notice over an hour before departure. We scuttled swiftly through the concourse and were some of the last passengers to board, before spending the hour sitting on the tarmac aboard our snazziest plane yet.
The flight was good and after 4 hours we were disembarking into the 40 degree dark heat of late night Qatar. The airport was incredible, filled with swanky shops and restaurants, indoor monorails and all sorts of huge, weird modern art sculptures. It was a significant trek to our next departure gate so having stocked up on duty free we headed off to our connecting flight where we slept most of the way to Dar Es Salaam.
