So today we didn't sleep in! Because we never slept! Left the room at 1:30 and went to Bali Joe so Annie could stand outside and use the wifi! Classy ;) she had to let her mum know we were climbing a volcano, just in case it erupts!
We got picked up at 2:00am in a Honda jazz! My mother will love this! I actually felt a little sick in the car thinking, what the hell are we doing climbing 1170metres into Bali's most active volcano!
It was freezing cold and I wore shorts, I did think to take a jacket though! Good job because took us 3 hours to treck to the top, in the pitch black!
The easier part is some areas are volcanic sand so it's easier to trek through but stepping on the rocks and rubble absolutely kills my feet after a few hours! I want to give up please they should just build an escalator up this stupid thing!
My flashlight also stopped working after 15 minutes so the guide at the front was just guessing where he was going, Annie in the middle was alright but I was at the back falling into lavareous canyons, tripping over volcanic rock and getting chased by every grass snake in sight!
We asked if we were there yet about 23 times ;) we did keep stopping at these cool little vents in the ground with moss growing inside of them, hot steam protrudes from them! Cool! And it's a sign were getting closer to the summit! Or summit like that ;)
Got to the top and stopped for an hour until the sunrise! Had a banana and egg sandwich as our breakfast! Needed the energy though, I never would have thought a banana, an egg and two slices of bread could taste so good!
The sun started to rise from behind another volcano next to Mt Batur, it looked amazing! The sky went from dark Blue to bright purple and red, then to orange/yellow! And the brighter the light got the more we could see the shimmer reflected in the sulphurous lake between the volcanoes!
Be-a-utiful!
Other Trekkers getting in my way trying to take photos in front of me were almost pushed in! Especially the Canadian girls, they really annoy me when they push past to get a photo when I'm clearly standing there! They clearly must think the sun rises within a minute and is then gone because they have no manors! Really, the sun takes over an hour rise to get out my way!
Trekked another 30 minutes from here right to the summit of the Volcano! It's even colder! This part we went through the steam and fog of the clouds and got up there just in time to see the sun rise above them! It looked amazing!
There was a 'congratulations, you've reached the peak of Mt Batu Bali' sign dug into the ground! It was a relief to see it! Other tourists are being really boring and taking thumbs up photos of each other around it - we're too cool for school and friends our age really won't care so instead we fell asleep on the sign and considered planking! Our tour guide loved it, but everyone else just stared, I couldn't care less!
At 10:00AM we began our descent and this is where the cuts and bruises came in! Going down is so much quicker there was parts where we were actually running down and sliding through the grey/black volcanic sand! I fell over and grazed my arm on a rock and when I saw the blood seeping through my jumper I wanted to cry for a helicopter to just come get me down :( of course I just pretended it was the rocks fault for moving and not for the fact that my legs just gave in!
Made it to the bottom absolutely knackered with two lungs full of volcanic ash, cuts on my arm, shoes full of sulphuric rock and a wet and swollen body! I think due to the altitude it made our hands swell up really bad, they turned a pink/white colour!
I'm kind of a little disappointed it didn't erupt, it would have made for an epic blog and amazing photos! Believe me I tried throwing every rock available into the summit but got no reaction, I guess it was tired?
I had never been so happy to get my feet back on solid ground, I wasn't too tired but it's just the walking up/downhill really takes it out on the feet and ankles! I have also never been so thankful to see a Honda Jazz to pick me up! Now anytime I need my mum to pick me up from work she's gonna say, 'only in the jazz' 'if you were stuck on a volcano you'd get in it then wouldn't ya?' and the answer would be a big fat YES!
Drove to a restaurant on the way back home and sat outside on the balcony that hangs over the caldera of the volcano! It felt amazing to sit there eating Indonesian lunch and look onwards across to the volcano that we just climbed! Feel pretty good about myself now! Himalayas who? Everest where? It's all about Mt Batur!
When we got back to the hotel after lunch I lied down for one second and was asleep the next! Then got woken up by Andhika knocking on the door at 2:00pm!
So we got up and went to the beach with him and we chilled for the afternoon!
