So today we are up early again for a trip up to the Kuranda Rainforest. I have to say again I am stunned by the mountain ranges surrounding Cairns. They are beautiful. We elected to take the cable car up and the train back. Have uploaded our tourist photo from the Skyrail car.
After getting over the height thing and every time we went over a cable tower the car jolted, I was ok. The veiws were spectacular. We stopped at Barron's Gorge to view the falls, which were small due to the lack of rain. Then on to Kuranda. We wandered up the village, stopped for lunch and had some meat pies, strolled through the Heritage Market, and then caught our bus to the Rainforestation Tour we booked. Here we got to hold a koala and a baby crocodile for photos, wander about the critter paddocks, see the huge salt water croc, go on an Army Duck vehicle tour where we saw lots of neat plants and two of the largest butterflies I've everr seen, The Ulysses butterfly, a gorgeous blue and black and the Cairns Birdwing, which is a vibrant green and black. We got to see members of the local Pirigami Aboriginal tribe perform dances and then had a go at throwing a boomerang, were given a spear throwing demonstration, and a didgerydo session. However, women are forbidden to play the instrument so we did not have the opportunity to try it out.
As we left, it started to rain softly, cooling down the area. As we borded the train with hundreds of other people and made our way back down the mountain, we stopped at Barron's Falls again, this time on the other side, and were able to take some more photos. As we travelled downwards, we saw the rain clouds following us down into the valley. It reminded me of Stephen King's story, The Mist. Loved the novella, but haven't seen the movie yet. We managed a dinner of microwave dinners and wine in the common room journaling and reading listening to the rain. We finally got to meet the large green tree frog which lives upstairs. He looked almost fake until I saw his sides moving with his breathing. Well, we have to be up early tomorrow, 4 a.m., to catch our flight to Uluru. So signing off.
